Resist Dyeing Techniques

A resist is any material or method that prevents dye from reaching the fibre in a specific area, creating a pattern. Resist dyeing is one of the oldest and most widespread approaches to patterned textiles in the world, with distinct traditions in Japan, West Africa, India, Indonesia, and Central Asia. Natural dye practitioners today draw on all of these traditions.

Tie-Dye and Shibori

Shibori is the Japanese term for a family of resist techniques that work by binding, folding, stitching, or compressing fabric before dyeing. The simplest form — tying sections of fabric with string before immersing in a dye bath — is the origin of what Western culture calls tie-dye. But shibori encompasses far more sophisticated approaches:

Shibori is particularly associated with indigo dyeing (see Step 16 — Fermentation Vats — Indigo and Beyond) but works with any dye.

Wax Resist — Batik

Batik involves applying hot wax to fabric to create resist areas, then dyeing and removing the wax (usually with boiling water or a solvent). The wax can be applied with a brush, a block, or a tjanting — a small copper cup with a spout that allows fine-line drawing. The characteristic crackling in batik, where dye seeps through tiny cracks in the wax, is considered part of the aesthetic. Beeswax and paraffin (or a blend of both) are typically used.

Paste Resists

Several traditions use paste-based resists rather than wax. Adinkra cloth from Ghana, adire from the Yoruba of Nigeria, and katazome from Japan all use starch or clay pastes applied through stencils or by hand. Rice paste (nori) in Japanese katazome, cassava starch paste in West African traditions, and a clay-flour mix (bokolanfini or mud cloth from Mali) are examples. These paste methods are non-toxic, washable, and accessible without specialist equipment.

Discharge and Dye-Removal Resists

A discharge resist works in the opposite way: you start with dyed fabric and remove colour from specific areas using a bleaching agent, creating a light-on-dark pattern. In natural dyeing, this is less common than in synthetic dyeing (most natural dyes discharge poorly), but some dyers achieve interesting results using weak citric acid or sunlight discharge on indigo-dyed cloth.

Combining with Eco Printing

Resist techniques combine beautifully with eco printing and natural dyeing. A piece of fabric can be first eco-printed, then folded and bound for a shibori over-dye, creating layers of botanical pattern and geometric form.
